Remote Bolinas, the oldest town in coastal Marin, sits atop the Pacific Plate, separated from the North American continent by the Bolinas Lagoon. It is an area of great natural beauty, bordered by national and state parks, as well as ranches, and organic farms. The village takes sustainability seriously, and local fresh produce, fish, eggs, and cheeses are available at roadside stands. The small beach is known for surfing, its gentle waves ideal for beginners. Bolinas draws artisans and artists, and has its own Fine Arts Museum. A community center provides a variety of programs for adults and children.
